Flight Fund Micro Grants Awards for January – June 2026
Through the Flight Fund, the Foundation fuels Charlotte Mecklenburg Library staff’s creative programming ideas. Guided by community need, these micro grants turn the spark of an idea into experiences and programs that spark learning, connection, and joy across our community.
This latest round of Flight Fund grantees showcases the incredible imagination and dedication of Library staff, with programs that celebrate writing, music, culture, wellness, creativity, and lifelong learning for all ages.
CML Writing Summit
Amanda Goldson | Pineville Library
Writers of all experience levels are invited to reconnect with their craft at the CML Writing Summit. This immersive event brings together local writers to celebrate the written word through inspiration, learning, and community. The summit features a virtual keynote by New York Times bestselling author and poet Maggie Smith (Dear Writer: Pep Talks & Practical Advice for the Creative Life), along with slam poetry performances by Bluz Rogers and Jay Ward, an interactive session with Nicole Ayers, a resource fair, and ample opportunities to connect with fellow writers.
After Hours Silent Disco

Celebrate the 2026 Community Read with an after-dark Silent Disco at the Library. Participants can choose their music channel, dance with wireless headphones, or relax in a chill-out room with snacks and games. This high-energy, low-pressure event transforms the Library into a vibrant social space designed for connection and fun.
Genre Fest: Black Love Edition

In honor of Black History Month, Genre Fest: Black Love Edition celebrates Black romance in all its forms. This book festival centers love of self and others through author talks and signings with local BIPOC romance writers, a romance book swap in partnership with Walls of Books, live violin music by B. Cooper, custom-written haiku poems, floral arranging, and specialty Love Bomb mocktails. This is sure to be a joyful, immersive celebration of Black love, creativity, and community.
CML Shadow Puppetry Kit
Hannah Simmons, in partnership with Becca Worthington, Madeline Herron, and Meghan Jennings | Multiple Library Locations
This innovative program brings multicultural storytelling to life through the art of shadow puppetry. Inspired by the long history of shadow puppetry originating in Asia, Library staff will use portable stages and handcrafted puppets to perform children’s stories drawn from diverse cultural traditions. The Shadow Puppetry Kit will travel to multiple Library locations, offering families a playful, imaginative, and educational experience. A good time without a shadow of a doubt!
Rooted & Rising
Lonna Vines | Myers Park Library
Rooted & Rising is a powerful four-part series hosted during Women’s History Month that explores today’s most pressing feminist issues. Featuring local leaders, artists, and activists, each session invites deep learning, meaningful dialogue, and practical action steps for community change. The series will culminate in a community-sourced feminist zine—created from shared insights and reflections—and conclude with a celebratory gathering at We Rock Charlotte Headquarters, where printed copies of the zine will be distributed.
An Evening with Author Daniel Black
Letitia Cunningham-Jordan | Hickory Grove Library
Join acclaimed author Dr. Daniel Black for a special Black History Month program exploring themes of identity, family, and the African American experience. This evening of conversation and storytelling invites reflection, connection, and inspiration. Books will be available for purchase and signing following the program. This free event is open to all.
Senior Expo
Princess McNeil | University City Regional Library
The Senior Expo is a health-focused resource fair designed to connect older adults with valuable community resources. Attendees can meet licensed healthcare providers, participate in a Q&A session, enjoy games and activities, and explore information about senior living and wellness services—all in one welcoming, accessible space.
Sensory Magnetic Board
Kay Cochran & Jennifer Williams-Cannon | North County Regional Library
This adaptive Makerspace addition invites learners of all ages and abilities to explore physical science and engineering concepts through hands-on play. The Sensory Magnetic Board encourages cause-and-effect learning, problem-solving, and creativity using magnetic boards and gears. No registration is required, and the equipment will support ongoing programming while remaining available for everyday Makerspace exploration.
