Libraries are and always have been “my home away from home.”  True, I have worked in the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library system over 15 years so when I am not at home, I am for the most part at the Library.  However, it is not merely the time spent at the Library but it is the pleasure, enlightenment, opportunities, and fulfillment provided by the Library which marks its value in my life.  Some of my fondest memories evolve around the library –

  • Going weekly with my sister to browse the collection for summer reading treasures; and many of these books continue to be amongst my all-time favorites.
  • Walking a mile to our closest neighborhood library pulling my young son in his “little red wagon” so we would have ample space for borrowed books.
  • Reading a “wagonload” of pictures books to my son every morning before sunrise.
  • Taking my daughter, Chelsea, to story time and her fascination with Ms. Cathy at Carmel Library and her flannel board stories.
  • Driving my daughter to her first volunteer opportunity at Carmel.
  • Volunteering at my children’s school library, Myers Park Traditional.
  • Volunteering at Morrison before having the good fortune of full-time employment.

As a staff member, I “give” attention and assistance to the public on a daily basis.  But the giving is not one-sided; in return, the library “gives” me —

  • experiences I cherish,
  • books, books, and more books,
  • continuous learning opportunities,
  • relaxation through shelving.

I firmly believe that our Library is the backbone of the community and I have a strong desire to help sustain the role of our Library in our community today and in the future. Funding is essential for the survival of the Library and our Library Foundation has our back.
