2025 Spring Flight Fund grants infuse exciting new ideas into Library programming
Flight Fund grants committee awarded financial support to four grantees in its fifth cycle of giving. The grants were for up to $2,500 to create and expand community activities that align with Library programming and equity priorities.
The committee who evaluated the submissions were Library staff members, Martha Yesowitch, Emily Nanney, Pamela McCarter, Reginald Villegas, and Foundation Board member Jennifer Bennett. The Library Foundation thanks them for their help in reviewing the staff’s impressive proposals and selecting another impactful slate of programming ideas. The following were chosen for funding.
South End Family Posada
South Boulevard Library
The Flight Fund micro-grant will fund a free, family-friendly Posada celebration where participants will enjoy tamales, champurrado, piñatas, aguinaldos, and traditional games like lotería. All are welcome—no Spanish required.
Gaming Team/WelcomeCLT Collaboration
Multiple Branches
This Flight Fund grant supports multiple programs supporting International Games Month and will culminate with After Hours Cultural Game Night, a big cultural celebration at University City Regional Library. Participants will play games from around the world, interact with community organizations and learn about new resources. They’ll receive a “passport” to be stamped at each station for the chance to win a free game. Snacks representing each country will be available.
Aviation Exploration
University City Regional Library
This grant supports a variety of STEM activities focused on aviation and aeronautics. Participants will pretend to be pilots, attendants, and engineers while participating in a variety of aviation themed activities including building mini airplanes, playing games using airport vehicles, solving plane themed puzzles, and more. All materials will be provided and is open to children and families.
Sunshine Strummers
Myers Park Library
In this four-week series, children will dive into ukulele basics, learn to play You Are My Sunshine, and even write their own tunes. With instruments provided and plenty of encouragement, participants will build skills, confidence, and creativity ending with a heartwarming performance for family and friends.
