The Update for October 4, 2024

Dear friends,

After the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, many evacuees have sought refuge in the Charlotte area. Our Library locations are open and free of charge to them, providing internet access, resources, information, and most importantly, a place to feel safe.

This past Monday, I attended an orientation session for nine new staff members. I was reminded that many people choose to work at Charlotte Mecklenburg Library for that very same reason. Public libraries are safe and welcoming places for all.

Their enthusiasm was so re-energizing. Each were asked to introduce themselves. One by one, the new staff members authentically shared how public libraries were a safe space for them growing up. Now it was their turn to ensure that others have the same experience.

One new staff member wasn’t so new; she was coming back after a two-year absence because she missed serving the community. I know exactly how she feels.

I’ve been with the Library Foundation for eleven years now. During such turbulent times in our world, I take comfort knowing there are places like public libraries – trusted ports in the storm during times of hardship where everyone feels safe, welcomed and seen.

As taxpayers and donors, thank you for keeping the doors of the Library open to all.

With gratitude,

Jenni Gaisbauer, CFRE
Executive Director

P.S.We are a month away from Verse & Vino and tables are going fast. We expect another sell out this year. Be sure to secure your seats today!

Artist Melody Cassen’s “Ancient Wisdom” is displayed at the Pineville location. All sales of these prints will be donated to the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library Foundation in support their mission of community-building, learning and literacy, creating safe spaces that welcome all, and valuing intellectual freedom.

Our Libraries serve as a place of refuge for all people — especially in times of crisis.

As Western North Carolina struggles with the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, many evacuees are coming to our area and visiting our Library locations. The Library is issuing guest passes for internet use regardless of where a customer is from and will not require proof of temporary Mecklenburg County address for individuals impacted by the hurricane.

Our branches are safe and welcoming places for evacuees and will continue to offer services to help during this time of extreme hardship.
