People who received refurbished laptops at our MeckTech distribution event were able to participate in informal computer sessions at their local branches. Staff are on hand to guide the new computer users on skills like emailing, web searches, and Zoom meetings.

December 2, 2022

Hello,

Here we are at the end of another year, and once again I am humbled at the generosity of our Library supporters. Please take a look below at the overwhelming support we received just in the last month alone.

I also wanted to share one of the Library’s newest services. To me it illustrates the ingenuity and adaptability of the Library staff and their devotion to serving people.

Our Library staff have created an innovative way to provide digital services to our Uptown patrons and fill a gap made by the closing of Main Library. Starting this week the Library is opening a Pop Up Computer Lab in First Ward Park. The lab will provide laptops, free Wi-Fi, printing services, and more on Mondays and Wednesdays with Library staff on site to help.

Digital access is an important part of everyone’s daily life. From healthcare to career services, digital literacy and access are often as necessary as food, shelter and education — and they enable access to all three.

The Foundation staff and I wish you the healthiest and happiest of holidays. We hope you’ll remember the Library in your end-of-year giving plans.

With gratitude,

Jenni Gaisbauer, CFRE
Executive Director

P.S. I’d like to send a special shout out to Library CEO “MT”. Congratulations for making Charlotte Magazine’s 2022 Charlotteans of the Year list!

Verse & Vino wows once again

Thank you to those who joined us — what a magical evening it was! The final numbers are in. This year’s event raised $485,525 with gifts still arriving, not to mention raising the spirits of our 1,100+ attendees.

And now we are 21…

We’ve been encouraging people to help us stock the shelves of the new Library branch opening in Pineville, Charlotte Mecklenburg Library’s 21st branch. Our newest branch is now open with a grand celebration planned for December 10 from noon to 4. Add a book or two to their shelves and join us on the 10th!

A Super Happy Tuesday

This past Tuesday was Giving Tuesday. Board member Peter Keane and his family foundation Alpha & Omega Foundation matched every gift dollar for dollar up to $10,000. The challenge helped us raise $27,991 with 237 donors on this international day of philanthropy.

What is Caroleen Burroughs reading?

Foundation board member Caroleen Burroughs harnessed the power of corporate matching gifts to maximize every donation given in honor of her birthday. And managed to read over 100 books this year! Check out her favorites.

Library CEO named 2022 Charlottean of the Year

Marcellus “M.T.” Turner has overseen a lot in his (almost) two years leading the Library. Time flies when you’re eliminating barriers to access, promoting literacy, building a new Main Library, and championing equity in one of the South’s fastest growing urban areas.

The former Seattle Public Library leader is happy to be closer to home and taking it all in stride.
