Eleanor Therese Walsh (née McCabe), entered into rest July 3, 2026 at the age of 93. She will be forever missed by her daughters Maureen Walsh (Jonathan Koricke), Kathleen Walsh (James Miskell), and granddaughters Caroline and Juliana Koricke.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Eleanor M. Carroll McCabe, father, Eugene A. McCabe, brothers Eugene A. McCabe Jr, Gerald J. McCabe, and John J. McCabe, and husband James D. Walsh.
Born December 1932 in Garfield Heights, OH, Eleanor excelled in school, playing the trumpet and basketball. After meeting and marrying ironworker James D. Walsh, she moved to Buffalo, NY and had her two daughters. Eleanor worked as a bookkeeper for over 30 years in a local manufacturing company.
Eleanor was a voracious reader, reading roughly 150 books per year in retirement. She passed on a love of reading to her daughters and granddaughters, and all enjoyed discussing books together. A dedicated gardener, Eleanor was a long-time volunteer and supporter of the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens. She also loved to quilt and was an accomplished needleworker, filling her home with handmade creations. An avid sports fan, Eleanor loved cheering on her Charlotte Hornets and keeping her family up to date on team happenings.
Christened “Nanni” by her eldest granddaughter, Eleanor doted on her two granddaughters and the three of them never ran out of things to talk about. The proprietor of recipes beloved beyond her family, Eleanor was well-known for her irreplicable mashed potatoes and zucchini bread. With a sweet-tooth she passed on to later generations, no dessert was safe around her- it was no good to let it go bad.
Eleanor was the most cherished member of her family. A calm presence in every room she was in, she could always be counted upon to provide a listening ear and words of reassurance. She also loved to talk and laugh, and was never happier than when surrounded by her people. She will be very dearly missed.
In lieu of flowers, Eleanor’s family requests donations to the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library in her memory, where she spent many happy hours.
A public service will be held at the St Gabriel's Chapel in Charlotte, NC on Friday, July 24th at 11am.
A service at Woodlawn Cemetery in Buffalo, NY, will be held in the fall.
