Jess Schauble is the new Programming Manager for the new Main Library. Thanks to the generosity of the Gambrell Foundation, Jess will lead the development of adult signature programming for our flagship location. Her creativity and passion for community engagement make her the ideal candidate to spark innovative programs in new Main. She joins the team with a strong background in programming and event management starting her career working on the leadership and education teams for two different fraternal organizations developing and implementing programs for undergraduate and alumni members. Her previous role was with Teach for America North Carolina where she served as Director of Regional Impact. Jess earned her bachelor’s degree from High Point University and her master’s degree from Ball State University.
Some of my favorite memories feature the backdrop of a small-town library nestled in the foothills of North Carolina.
On summer mornings, before the heat got too intense, I would walk with my grandmother to the local library. I knew that by the time we left, I’d be clutching a new stack of Nancy Drew mysteries, each one an entry into a world where clever girls like me were the heroes.
Later, there was the day I was offered something that felt like a rite of passage: my very own library card. My favorite librarian asked me if I was ready to check out books on my own instead of using my mom’s card. I was claiming my rightful place at the library, and it felt great.
That little library in my hometown didn’t just introduce me to stories, it helped to shape my story. It gave me independence, imagination, and a deep belief in the role libraries play in our lives. It’s exactly why I feel so honored to step into my new role as Main Library Program Manager for Charlotte Mecklenburg Library. And why I am so grateful for the Gambrell Foundation for the opportunity.
A Big Dream in the Heart of the City
This role isn’t just a job. Now, I have the opportunity to create the innovative and inspiring programming, but on a much larger scale. Main Library aspires to be at the heart of Charlotte’s educational and cultural life, a true Public Commons that welcomes everyone.
As Program Manager, I’ll be leading the planning and execution of large-scale events and signature programs designed to make Main Library a destination. Whether you’re Uptown for work, play, or simply because something inspired you to stop by, my goal is simple: create programming that makes you want to brave the traffic. Programming that feels so relevant, so energizing, so thoughtful, you’ll want to mark it on your calendar and bring a friend.
What Inspires Me Now
In this time before Main opens its doors, I’m diving deep. I’m exploring what other flagship libraries across the country are doing: from bold speaker series to immersive workshops to community-wide celebrations. I’m not just studying what works, I’m looking at why it works. What resonates with people? What makes a program feel like more than just an event, but a shared experience?
Just as important, I’m connecting with the experts – the passionate staff across Charlotte Mecklenburg Library’s branches. These are the people already engaging with and supporting neighborhoods throughout the county, and I’m learning from every conversation and collaboration. This foundational work is how we ensure Main hits the ground running, not just with events and programming, but with momentum.
What I Hope
Whether you’re coming to hear an author speak, explore your genealogy in the Carolina Room, return a book, or just meet a friend to catch up, I hope the experience of attending a program will provide you with that warm, fuzzy feeling that I get when I think about my hometown public library.
I’m part of an incredible team of people ensuring that Main Library becomes a place of belonging for you. A place that offers knowledge and discovery, yes — but also laughter, connection, and a sense of home.
Because that’s what libraries have always been at their best: a convener of the communities they serve, and a gateway for growth.
I can’t wait to meet you at Main.

Her local branch in Caldwell County holds fond memories for Jess – as well as the inspiration for her new role at Charlotte Mecklenburg Library.

Jess’s love of Nancy Drew (and her trips to the Library with her grandmother) influence her borrowing history today including her latest read Lake of the Lost Girls.
