Stonewall Sports Charlotte celebrates Pride Month with donation of LGBTQ children’s books

We often say that opening books opens minds, and a recent gift reflects this belief.

Stonewall Sports Charlotte, in partnership with Rosedale Health + Wellness, has donated over 350 LGBTQ children’s books to the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library Foundation as part of Pride Month celebrations.

With over 2,000 players, Stonewall Sports Charlotte is the largest LGBTQ sports league in the Carolinas, and the league has invested over $150,000 in regional organizations since 2014. “This donation shows one more way our players give back to the community.  We want everyone to feel safe and welcome in their home, school and community. We hope these books will support LGBTQ children and their allies,” said Roger Howard, Stonewall Commissioner.  “We are especially thankful for our corporate sponsor, Rosedale Health + Wellness, for matching our players’ donations while still supporting our league.”

Community leaders and educators helped select age-appropriate stories of inclusion. Titles include:

“This gift is perfectly timed with the season of Pride,” said Jenni Gaisbauer, Executive Director of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library Foundation. “These titles reflect and celebrate the diverse world we share, and will help more young readers see themselves, their families and their neighbors in the books they read.”

The books will augment the Library’s existing collection, and additional copies will be available to the community in a Mobile Library hitting the streets in the coming months.
